IF YOU HAVE A
WORKING HOLIDAY VISA

You will need to register your address and apply for Japanese Health Insurance.

Follow the steps below

Step 1:

Residence Registration 住民登録(じゅうみんとうろく)

You need to register your address at your local ward/city office.

Example: If you live at Nakahara-ku, Kawasaki-shi, please go to Nakahara Kuyakusho (Nakahara Ward Office) or Kawasaki Shiyakusho (Kawasaki City Hall)

Each office has a different form, but you will have to fill out your personal information and your address.

It is also important to know where your accommodation is on a map as the staff will need to confirm your location.

We recommend notifying the host as you will receive letters from the ward office.

Step 2:

Apply for Japanese National Health Insurance 国民健康保険(こくみんけんこうほけん)

As a Japanese residence, it is your duty to pay National Health Insurance.

Please make sure to say that you do not have income so that you pay the minimum amount.

If you decide to work, your work place will report your income, and the amount might change.

Payment slips for health insurance will arrive after registration (may take several weeks).

Make the payments for national health insurance according to each slip deadline at any convenience stores.

About National Pension System 年金(ねんきん)

Please inform the staff at the ward/city office that you do not have any income in Japan. You will not have to pay for National Pension.

You will need to fill a form requesting exemption. We have this at the school reception.

If you do work and pay for National Pension, you can request to receive it back (partially) once you have left Japan. More information here.

If there are any letters from the ward/city office that you do not understand, please do not hesitate to bring it to the EF reception. We are always happy to help you.
